Article At Mention

A mention is a reference to content, a member, a group, or an application within the content. Mentions are added through the content editor and are shown as links to the item mentioned. When a mention is added, the member or owner of the location can be notified (based on their notification settings) that they were mentioned to call attention to the content and improve targeting of responses to otherwise wider-targeted content.

Using the @ symbol, you can create a link from content, a username, or group name inside a post, comment or reply. For users and groups, the at mention will alert users or group members that they’ve been added to your content and your attention is required. Note that mentioning is optional.

IMPORTANT: To receive @mention notifications via email you must Enable Email Options. Please read: Customize your Email & Live Alert Notifications  for complete instructions.

The following instructions apply to "at mentioning" content, a user, or a group.

Create an "At Mention"

  1. In a post or comment, start with typing @ immediately followed by letters from the content, user, group, or application name.
  2. A drop-down list of possible matches appears.  Additionally, search filters will appear.  The filters available will only include possible selections.  For example, if you type a person's name, and there is no content or group with that person's name, you will not see group or content filters.

  1. Choose the correct choice from the drop-down list by selecting it with your mouse or clicking Enter on your keyboard.  After you make your selection, the mentioned item has a gray shaded box around it..
  2. After you have added the item, you can click on it to see additional options. Remove, Convert to Link, or Convert to Preview.  See details in the At Mention Settings section below.

View at mentioned items

Once your content has been published, readers can view a preview of the at mentioned content, user, or group by hovering over the item.  Other actions are available on the preview, such as saving a bookmark or direct messaging a user.  Selecting the title will navigate the reader to that item.

At Mention Settings

By default, the mentioned item will appear in a gray shaded box.  Once saved, when hovered over, the item will display a pop-up preview.  to activate other options, select the at mentioned item while in Edit mode.

  1. Remove: turns the at mention into non-linkable text
  2. Convert to Link: displays the full URL.  Once you choose this option, the at mention functionality is gone, but the link is clickable for readers.
  3. Convert to Preview: displays an embedded preview of the mentioned item without requiring users to hover over the item
    1. Choosing the Preview option enabled additional setting options where you can change the size of the preview box. Do not change the URL, as this will remove the at mentioned item and preview.

Embedded At Mention Previews

The previews below can be embedded by choosing Convert to preview, as described above.  This same preview is available by hovering over the default gray shaded box with the item's title.

User Preview

Group Preview

Content Preview

The following is a repeat of the content mentioned earlier in the article, but is an example of how an embedded preview appears without changing the default size.
